I have a confession. I’m obsessed with efficiency. I’ve always been a planner. I think about time constantly and when it comes to doing anything…I want to know how to do it smarter, not harder. I don’t mind working hard, but if I can figure out a way to do it faster and better I will.

In this episode I’ll share time saving techniques in the following areas:

  • How your smartphone can put you on auto-pilot
  • What system is essential to be a master networker
  • The difference between habits and goals
  • Why working smarter beats working harder

What do you do efficiently? In what areas can you improve? Share something that saves you time and it might just help someone else!

The word discrimination conjures up many negative thoughts and images, especially along the lines of prejudice. But what if I told you discriminating is essential for success both in your personal and professional life? How is that possible? Such a powerful concept is used by you and me daily, but we just don’t label it that. Let me give you a few examples.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How time is given to us equally, but how we use it determines everything
  • Why being treated “fairly” sucks
  • What 3 factors reveal your priorities
  • How your golf strategy may be hurting you

So after listening, do you consider yourself discriminatory? Why or why not?

Winsight Episode 28: Value-Based Decisions

I admit. I’m not great at making money. Does that mean I’m poor? Not necessarily. Does that mean I’m rich? Depends on how you define rich.

All I know is the most valuable currency to me is my time. The ability to control my schedule is what matters because I can prioritize what I spend my time doing. The other night my wife and I had a great conversation about personal and professional goals. I shared with her when I have talks with others, either the same age as me or older, somewhere in our discussion spending time with your kids while they’re young comes up. I thought about how much time I spend with my daughter who recently turned two and it brings a smile to my face.

In this episode hear my personal story of value-based decisions through the following examples:

Staying home vs. working a 9 – 5

The difference between mission/vision statements and actual behaviors

What “lifestyle” really means and how to pursue it

Plan A & Plan B: which one is really better?

What are your core values? Looking at how you spend your time, what do you really value? Please share a value-based decision you make and how it affects those around you.

Winsight Episode 13: Morning Good

How you start your day has a LOT to do with how productive you are. I’m not talking about working harder, but working smarter. Think life-hacking. This isn’t about shortcuts, but being efficient. The best way to do that is building the right habits from the time you get up.

If someone asked me what advice I’d give to aspiring entrepreneurs, I’d say: workout 3 – 5 times a week in the morning before you start work. In this episode, I’ll discuss the following evidence:

The real reason why working out in the morning trumps any other time of the day

How to work according to your “rhythm”

What entrepreneurs lose (besides a guaranteed paycheck) when leaving a corporate job

Who else is doing morning workouts and why you should to

Do you consider yourself a morning person? If so, what are the benefits? If not, does this episode alter your thinking? Please share your thoughts below!

Winsight Episode 11: DIFM (Do It For Me)

life hacks, convenience, auto-pilot, emotional purchase, iphone 5s, there's an app for that

Ever heard of D-I-Y or Do it Yourself? Well, we’ve almost moved past that to D-I-F-M or Do It For Me. Think about it. Uber and Lyft exist so someone else can drive you to where you need to go. Lexus created an auto-park feature for its car. Subscription boxes are becoming more popular because not only do you get something delivered to you, but most of the time it’s a surprise so you don’t even have to make a decision on what to buy. This sort of “concierge” mentality can be viewed as a bit ridiculous, but what implications does this have for you?

In this episode we will discuss:

How service-based businesses have been forward thinking for a long time

Why living where you do may be the biggest innovative advantage you have

The one thing you must measure before you start any business

The difference between a hobby and business

What type of DIFM ideas do you have? Please share and I’m sure the feedback will help refine it!

Winsight Episode 6: Don’t Be a Street Sweeper

[audio http://traffic.libsyn.com/winsight/06_Winsight_Episode_6_-_Dont_Be_a_Street_Sweeper.mp3]

On our street every Friday a street sweeper comes by and supposedly cleans the side of the road near the curb. Call me cynical, but that machine has to be the biggest waste of money known to man. All it does is swirl the dirt and debris in the air and spray some water down. It doesn’t actually pick anything up or clean the area. In fact, it seems like the only purpose is to catch people who don’t read the parking signs and give them a ticket. To me, the only winner here is the city.

In today’s episode I’ll discuss why a street sweeper is similar to how we live our lives. We’ll cover the following points:

  • Why being “busy” isn’t a good thing
  • What a rocking horse has to do with motion vs. progress
  • Where relaxing went wrong and prioritizing went right
  • Why money isn’t the most important currency anymore

So after learning about how you can be a street sweeper sometimes, what are “busy” doing? Please share your thoughts below!

street sweeper, street cleaning, parking ticket, parking violation, no street parking, santa monica parking, being busy

Winsight Episode 5: Why You Need a PHD (Permanent Hustle Degree)

[audio http://traffic.libsyn.com/winsight/05_Winsight_Episode_5_-_PHD.mp3]

School is overrated. Now with a Bachelors and Masters Degree under my belt that sounds hypocritical coming from me, but knowledge doesn’t necessarily translate to real world skills.

You can’t afford to wait for the economy to rebound. It’s not going to happen.

In this episode, I’ll explain the following reasons why you need a PHD (permanent hustle degree):

  • Why there is NO substitution for experience
  • Networking shouldn’t just be a goal, it should be part of your lifestyle
  • How public speaking is just like selling
  • Why you need a side hustle and when you should start one (or many)

What’s your experience with school and how has it shaped you into the person you are today? What idea has been brewing in your head/heart that you need to share with the world? Comment below because we need to know!

How to Be More Confident

Who wouldn’t like to be more confident?!

It’s the most desired, intangible trait you can have. Believe it or not, it’s not overly complicated to attain.

Want to know the secret? Drumroll…

doubts, self-confidence, superman, superwoman, boost my confidence

Achieve more.

That’s it?! Simple enough, right?

Think about the last time you were confident. It probably involved you performing and getting recognized for it. A lot of the times we do what we get noticed for. Not always a bad thing, but our ego is involved.

People who are self-confident achieve more. It goes hand-in-hand.

Take for instance one of my coaching-client conversations:

Client: “I’ve been in the same job for 5 years and hate it. I want to leave, but am afraid if I do I won’t have anything else. Can you help me make the transition?

Me: “So you know I can’t promise you employment right? That’s a guarantee no one can make (unless they’re going to hire you themselves).”

Client: “Oh yeah, I don’t expect that, but I need a game plan…something to help me figure out if it’s worth taking the risk of leaving my current job.”

Me: “So you want me to help you with an exit strategy and give you tips on how to get into a new industry right?

Client: “Yes.”

Me: “So what you’re really looking for is to gain more confidence so you’re willing to chase after your dreams.”

Client: “Exactly.”

When you set and achieve goals it builds momentum. It’s like that snowball rolling down the hill in cartoons. It starts small then gets bigger as it picks up speed. Start with small goals, achieve those, then become more ambitious in your pursuit(s). The more you achieve, the greater your confidence.

At the heart of what I do as a coach is build people’s self-confidence. That’s what I tell people when they call me from Yelp!

Check Your Alignment

Alignment isn’t just about your car tires.

A lot of times our lives are out of whack because our goals and actions are out of alignment.

check your alignment, pep boys, costco tire, treads, oil change, buy 3 get 1 free

For example, if your goal is to purchase a house in the future, why are you spending without a budget in mind?

If you want to lose weight, how come you’re not changing your eating and exercise habits?

If you want to grow in your career, why aren’t you speaking up, networking and looking for new opportunities?

I wrote a post about goals and habits earlier where the majority of people focus on goals, but never discipline themselves to implement the habits that will get them there. Only when your habits are aligned will you achieve your goals.

We all have the same amount of time in a day. It just differs how you utilize it. Goals are easy to set. They’re much harder to accomplish. Mark Cuban said it best, “Don’t follow your passion, follow your effort.” Translated into practical terms it means: don’t just go after what you want, go after what you’re willing to do the work for.

So the next time you set a goal, make sure you have the steps (habits) in place to actually get you there and the accountability to make sure it gets done. That’s when you’ll know you’re aligned.
