Winsight Episode 35: Adversity and the Celebrity Quarterback

When I’m in the car by myself I like to listen to sports radio instead of music. One of the reasons is I’m a huge Lakers fan so I want the latest scoop on them, but mostly I find sports radio intriguing. The more opinionated the host, the more listeners tune in. One morning while listening to Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio, he used the term “celebrity quarterback” and it had practical applications for you and me.

In this episode learn the following points:

  • What successful quarterback have overcome that mediocre ones haven’t
  • Why feeling like “quitting” is a good thing
  • What this generation hates, but is priceless
  • The different question a victim vs. a victor asks him/herself

Are you a “celebrity quarterback?” How do you normally handle adversity? What’s one takeaway you can apply this week?

Think about the best public speakers you’ve heard. I bet their execution was flawless. They tell stories, speak with passion and beam with confidence. Public speaking still ranks as the #1 fear amongst adults, so if you improve your public speaking skills you stand out from the crowd. Every speaker has a style unique to them, but if there is one attribute that can bring your speaking game to the next level, it’s speaking without notes.

In this episode, learn the following ways to improve as a public speaker:

  • Why memorizing your speech is actually a bad thing
  • My method for plotting your next talk
  • The #1 benefit from speaking without using notes
  • The reason why public speaking is becoming even more of a game changer

After listening to this episode, what tips will you implement the next time you speak? Name your favorite speaker and what makes him/her memorable. How do you want to be remembered as a speaker?

Winsight Episode 30: The Next Dinosaur

When referring to dinosaurs thoughts of extinction come to mind. But in this case, the next dinosaur is around, but on life support: it’s communication. I’m not talking about texting, emailing or Facebook messaging, but face-to-face communication. If you don’t believe me, go to the local hangout where teenagers gather and observe them. Most will be in a group, on their smartphones texting, sharing pictures or commenting on someone’s post completely ignoring the fact actual humans are right next to them. If you’re brave enough engage them in a conversation and if you can carry it (without much help from them) for more than 5 minutes, you’ve done well. Of course I’m stereotyping here, but poor communication is a trend that is rapidly growing and will be a thing of the past unless we do our part to reverse it.

In this episode, using Millennials as the subject, we’ll discuss:

What two forms of communication tend to lack in quality

The one thing Millennials need from supervisors in order to improve

How interviews connect to the longevity of an employee

The question one must ask to move forward

What’s been your interaction with Millenials at work? How can you help them moving forward? Please share your thoughts below!

Millennials. A single word can conjure up varying descriptions and emotions. Some of the stereotypes about this generation are true, yet others are not. Instead of sitting here and complaining about the shortcomings of this group, I prefer to point out how to lead them effectively.

In this episode the following points will be discussed:

  • Why teaching isn’t about being the “best in your field
  • How body language is a warning sign for motivation
  • The two types of vision that need to align
  • What Baby Boomers and Millennials have in common

Does this change your thoughts on Millennials? What adjustments will you make dealing with Millennials going forward?

Winsight Episode 17: Ambassador of Kwan

jerry maguire, rod tidwell, show me the money, ambassador of kwan, you had me at hello

[audio http://traffic.libsyn.com/winsight/17_Winsight_Episode_17_-_Ambassador_of_Kwan.mp3]

Do you remember the scene in the movie Jerry Maguire where Rod Tidwell (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.) refers to Jerry (played by Tom Cruise, his agent), as his ambassador of Kwan? Well, I looked up the definition of Kwan on the internet and found it means: love, respect, community and money. These are all things Rod expected Jerry to provide for him.

The practical application for you and me is we need an ambassador of Kwan in our lives. In this episode, learn about the following concepts:

  • How you go about finding your own “agent”
  • The 2 types of networking you need to do
  • What smart people do and what you should be doing too!
  • The number of people you need in your network to succeed

So who’s your ambassador of Kwan? If you don’t have one, what qualities do you look for in finding that person? Please share your thoughts below!

Life isn’t about what happens to you. It’s about how you to choose to respond to it.

Winning in life has a lot to do with how you view the world. You can choose to be a victim or you can choose to be a victor.

During this podcast I’ll discuss:

  • What reframing is and how it can help you
  • Why skeptics can end up being your best customers
  • When sometimes its better for others to talk for you
  • The difference between going down the winning vs. losing road

How can you flip the script on a current challenge? Please share your story below so others can be inspired! Thanks!

Winsight Episode 3: The Importance of Goliath

[audio http://traffic.libsyn.com/winsight/03_Winsight_Episode_3_-_Goliath.mp3]

The original Goliath in the Bible was a defeated in a huge upset by David and ever since then the underdog has become the fan favorite.

In this episode I’d like to pose the argument why we all need “Goliaths” in our lives through the following points:

  • How Nike leads the pack and everyone else benefits from them
  • The Tiger effect and how he is bigger than the sport itself
  • Why dominance in sports is good and parody is bad
  • Why identifying your personal Goliath is important and how your legacy depends on it

Who or what is your Goliath? Share how you have overcome this figure in the comments below and you’ll inspire someone else to do the same!

Leaving Einstein Behind
Albert Einstein has some things going for him, such as the theory of relativity. When people mention a genius, he’s usually the first to come up.
In today’s world Bill Gates brought personal computing to the mainstream. He paved the way for new industries, professions and mindsets that would revolutionize how careers are defined. His influence is most evident among young, tech-savvy professionals seeking career paths greatly different from how their predecessors earned a living.
Technology has created new and different ways of doing business. It’s changed how professionals are fulfilling their job responsibilities. Young Professionals are flocking to the tech industry because of the unique set of opportunities offered. Thanks, Bill Gates.
Here are just some of the draws to tech positions:
Flexible Working Conditions
More often professionals are working remotely and outside of the standard 9 to 5 work schedule. These workers have more opportunities to build their own schedules to accommodate their lifestyle while doing it from home and cutting out the daily commute.
Increased Entrepreneurial Opportunities
Technology has greatly expanded the market for do-it-yourself types to create their own start-up companies. It’s helpful to have a Degree in Information Technology to have a strong understanding of the tech industry. Plenty of professionals are finding ways to focus their own areas of specialty to create new tech solutions.
The low overhead of developing tech-based revenue streams, whether by creating mobile apps, becoming a social media expert or finding other ways to improve upon existing information technology – makes it easier to take risks with new business ventures and even do so without giving up a day job.
Tech Fluency as a Job Market Advantage
The younger generations never experienced a world where technology wasn’t a part of everyday life. As these young professionals enter the workforce, they have an inherent advantage over older generations and will have an easier time acclimating to the continual changes that pervade the tech industry.
Technology has allowed younger professionals to reconsider their main motivations in the workplace, and as a result many are putting quality of life in front of money. Jobs that offer a healthy work-life balance are prefered. Bill Gates may not have had that in mind when he developed the first Microsoft computer, but it’s definitely a by-product of his innovation.

Be a Connector

“A connector is someone with an extraordinary knack of making friends and acquaintances.” – Malcolm Gladwell
Simply put, connectors know a lot of people.
Why is this important? Successful career longevity is based on who you know.
Here are 3 ways to become a connector:
Focus on helping others. It’s not always about you. Networking becomes less daunting when your goal is to help others. Be curious. Ask questions. Listen. Figure out how you can help them.
Ask for introductions. Start with who you know, share your goals, then ask your contact(s) to introduce you to someone they know. It’s like a game of connect the dots. Keep doing this and your network will grow significantly over time.

Track your contacts. Create a system that helps organize when you last contacted someone and what you talked about. The consistency of your follow up will determine your effectiveness. The same concept that SalesForce uses to track leads can work for you.

What if building your connection base wasn’t a “means,” but the “end” (of your goal)? How would that shift your approach to networking? Think of your network as investing in relationships. It’s a worthwhile goal that will reap benefits for a long time.
