A recent Gallup study shows that the employee quit-rate (the percentage of employees quitting their jobs) in the US is at an all-time rise. The study results reflect characteristics of Millennials and Z generation so there is no reason to think the situation is different in other countries. The phenomenon is relevant to employees at all levels and all company sizes, from small start-ups to Fortune 100 companies. It is as relevant to entrepreneurs that have doubts about the future of their business.

There is little need to expand on the significance of key-talents (or any talent for that matter) leaving an organization – as the study points out – it’s better to keep a star than hire a question mark.

For the employees themselves, whether they are already halfway through their career or just starting (or even freshly graduated and pondering what career-path to take), making the right decision is paramount to their future fulfillment and well- being.

3 Reasons Why Knowledge Is Power in Your Professional Life

We’ve all grown up hearing phrases like “knowledge is power,” and it’s the kind of line that seems to be clearly true on some level. But, it’s not always exactly evident how it’s true, or how it applies and plays out in the different areas of our personal, and especially professional, lives.

What gets measured, gets improved

There’s a very well-known saying in the business world, that “what gets measured, gets improved.”

Note that the saying isn’t “if you measure things it’s a bit easier for you to improve them.” The implied benefit seems to happen automatically – improvement comes as a basic side-effect of measurement, in and of itself.

Why could this be? Well, when you start tracking data and analytics of various sorts, it’s very difficult to escape from the awareness of whether you’re performing well and where you’re performing badly. On a subconscious level, you’ll likely be motivated to tighten things up in order to improve your metrics – even if you’re not laying out an explicit and specific action plan to do so.

Simply measuring things is likely to improve them. And yes, it’s also easier to actively and consciously improve things when you have some data points to work with.

Data points are necessary for incremental “1% improvements”

Improvement is one thing, and it’s certainly possible to make dramatic improvements in your business – and to get a decent sense of whether those improvements are actually working out and taking hold – without micro-tracking various metrics.

But, when it comes to actively striving to make incremental “1%” improvements to your business or professional performance, you’ll likely never really know if you’re on the right track unless you’re watching the right data points and are paying enough attention.

There are reasons why this really matters. For one thing, as the author James Clear points out, many of the most successful “productivity transformations” out there have taken place specifically because of a commitment to small iterative improvements based on the concept of becoming “1% better” every day.

For another thing, it’s a lot easier to identify ways in which you can make things “1% better” in your professional life, day after day, than it is to hit massive performance targets with any regularity.

And, if you can get 1% better every day, you may be more than three times better within a year.

Our minds have a habit of reminding us and making us overthink! At the end of the day, a job is a job, and it will come with some hard days – no matter what line of work you enter. That said, you may as well look to minimize the impact of the hardships by stepping into something that you’ll be content in. 

Working in something that you’d enjoy isn’t a luxury that’s afforded to every single person. It is absolutely possible, however. Let’s have a little talk about things you should think about when considering a job that you’ll like.   

Think About What You Love

Obviously, you’ll probably want to jot down what you enjoy doing and then do a little research into the jobs that surround that kind of thing. It might seem like a pipe dream at first, but there will definitely be opportunities somewhere that have links to what you want. Somebody has to fill that role at some point – why can’t it be you? 

Think About What You Hate 

On the flip side, you should probably also write down what you absolutely do NOT want to head into. As we said before, it’s a big chunk of your life, so why would you want to spend eight or so hours a day absolutely demoralized? 

Rule Out Overnight Success

It’s something we all instinctively think about when we picture a job or a career path. We skip past the journey and see success. Think about a job that you’ll enjoy actually grind away at. The journey, at times, is just as satisfying as then end result.

Try Different Things 

Perhaps just getting out there and having a good go at different jobs could be the way to go for you. There’s nothing quite like actually experiencing something. You can read up on it and know all of the theory, but actually doing it makes a big difference. You might get into a job and realize that it’s something you’d absolutely love to pursue.
